Like the first in the series Skylar Robbins: The Mystery of Shadow Hills, and the second as well, Skylar Robbins: The Mystery of the Hidden Jewels, the cover artwork for this title needed to appeal to tweens. It was important to the author to create an image of a particular scene in the novel. In this scene a major clue is discovered by the protagonist’s study-buddy in the dark and dangerous waters below the Santa Monica pier. Many images had to be composited to achieve this end.
